what are varicose veins?

Varicose veins, also known as varicoses or varicosities, occur when your veins become enlarged, dilated, and overfilled with blood.

Varicose veins typically appear swollen and raised, and have a bluish-purple or red color.

They are often painful. The condition is very common, especially in women.

Causes of varicose veins

Varicose veins develop when the small valves inside the veins stop working properly.

In a healthy vein, blood flows smoothly to the heart. The blood is prevented from flowing backwards by a series of tiny valves that open and close to let blood through.

If the valves weaken or are damaged, the blood can flow backwards and collect in the vein, eventually causing it to be swollen and enlarged (varicose).

Certain things can increase your chances of developing varicose veins, such as:

1. Having a close family member with varicose veins

2. Being older

3. Being overweight(obesity)

4. Having a job that involves long periods of standing or even seating

5. Being pregnant

6.  Loosing weight suddenly

7. Smoking and drinking alcohol

Symptoms of varicose veins

The primary symptoms of varicose veins are highly visible, misshapen veins, usually on your legs. You may also have pain, swelling, heaviness, and achiness over or around the enlarged veins.

In some cases, you can develop swelling and discoloration. In severe cases, the veins can bleed significantly, and ulcers can form.

Varicose veins ,treat it or not ?

What would happen if just ignore it?

Varicose vein disease is a progressive condition , left untreated they could lead to more engorged and swollen veins.
In early stage they may appear as blue to red spider veins on the legs and feet then will gradually progress to become more prominent and thickened with purple or dark blue color appearance.
Majority of people affected by this disease used to manage them wearing compression stocking and occasionally sclerotherapy.
Eventually at the end the veins may look like ropes distributing from thighs down to the legs where they would be treated using endovascular laser.
What if we do not do anything for them?
They can bleed under the skin leaving dark brown pigmentation, in later stage even causing pain or discomfort in the legs and in the worst increasing the risk of DVT.
